What it is #

Rexcapade is a platform game you play with your thumbs or the arrow keys. You pick one of ten little dinosaurs (Rex the T-rex to start with), run, jump over pits, climb ledges and stairs, bump the blocks for coins and power-ups, and stomp the critters in your way. The coins mark a safe way through every level. A flag halfway lets you try again from there. Every level ends with a staircase and the flagpole: the higher you catch the flagpole, the more it pays, and the time left on the clock pays too. A pipe with a ring takes you down to a bonus room of coins and out further along the level. Stomp critters in a row without landing and each one pays more. A fall, a hit or the clock running out ends the try, and one tap starts you again.

Levels are numbered and never run out. The first level is already as full and as demanding as a late one, and from there the timing keeps tightening. A level's layout is drawn again every time you play, so a second try at the same level never plays the same way. Every level is a few stretches, each with its own character (meadow, hills, forest, ruins or sky) and its own weather (clear, cloudy, rain or snow), and the coins over every pit come in a different pattern each time, so no two plays look alike. It is drawn like a paper map: flat colours, rounded shapes and a cut-out shadow under everything. With the theme on auto, it is light by day and dark by night where you are, and a play that runs through sunset or sunrise changes as it goes. Any level can bring any of these: bridges, packs of compies, stone stairs, stepping stones, pipes (some with a plesiosaur inside, some with a ring to go down), hopping eggs, treetops and floating platforms, stumps, hatchlings popping out of their nests, pyramids, spines, giant dragonflies, lifts, egg thieves that throw eggs, pterodactyls and spiky kentros, each one introduced with a short line the first time you meet it.

  • Land on a compy, a hopping egg, a hatchling, an egg thief or a pterodactyl to stomp it. A kentro's spikes and a giant dragonfly's tail hurt from above too, so jump right over them. Falling into a pit, or touching a critter, spines or an egg, ends the try. A shield takes one hit, or carries you over a pit.
  • Every level has a clock, set at about twice what a straight run takes. Waiting for every critter to pass costs time, and when the clock runs out the try is lost. Finishing pays 20 coins, up to 20 more for how high you catch the flagpole and up to 10 more for the time left.
  • Jump into the blocks from below. Crates hold a coin or a power-up, and some bricks hold a run of coins. The hard hat takes a hit and breaks bricks. With the hat on, a crate gives you the pouch, for throwing pinecones at critters. The comet makes you untouchable for a while.
  • You keep the coins you collect even when you fall. Spend them in the store on shields, upgrades and new looks: 100 characters (ten little dinosaurs, each one of a kind, in ten outfits) and 100 backgrounds. Each star you earn on a finished level pays 10% more of that level's coins.
  • Your profile keeps your stats: time played, levels finished, distance run, critters stomped, blocks bumped, power-ups taken, jumps, coins picked up, earned and spent, and more.
  • It plays in English or Spanish. It starts in the site's language, and the EN/ES button beside its name switches between them.

Modes #

  • Levels: numbered levels that get harder as you go, in worlds of ten. Each world has its own colours and music, and every play uses another of its colours. Every level has three stars: finish it, collect every coin, and finish it on the first try.
  • Daily level: one level a day, the same for every player. A new one arrives at midnight UTC.
  • Endless: one run that keeps getting harder until you fall or get hit. Your score is how far you ran.

The leaderboard ranks players with a free account: the furthest level and stars, and the best distance in Endless. Its top 10 is in the game and on this page.
