What it is #
Boxlock is a puzzle about pushing crates around a small room. You walk one step at a time, and walking into a crate pushes it one cell if the cell behind it is free. You can push a crate but never pull it, so a crate that ends up in a corner, or against a wall it can't get away from, is stuck for good. That ends the try, and one tap or Space starts again. Put every crate on a goal, the dots on the floor (a crate on its goal turns dark), and the room is done.
Levels are numbered and never run out. A level's number sets how many crates there are and how far they have to travel. The room is made anew every time you play, turned another way and in other colours, and the game's own solver has finished it before you see it, so every room can be won. Each room also gives you a set number of steps, counted at the top of the screen: run out and the try ends. Further on, patrol bots, holes, coloured crates, a switch gate, sliding crates and one-way tiles join in, a few at a time. Each one is introduced with a short line the first time you meet it.
How to play #
| Phone or tablet | Computer | |
|---|---|---|
| Walk and push | Swipe the way you want to go: each swipe is one step, and keeping your finger down walks on. Or tap a cell to walk there, or a crate in line with you to walk up to it and push it once | Arrow keys (or W, A, S, D); hold one to keep walking |
| Wait a step, in rooms with bots | The Wait button under the room | Space |
| Start and try again | Tap | Space |
| Menus | Tap the buttons | Left and right arrows change the level, Space or Enter plays, Escape pauses and closes panels |
- A bot takes one step along its rail every time you take one, and a faint ring shows where it will be next. Stepping onto its cell, or swapping places with it, ends the try.
- Push a crate into a hole and it fills it, so you can walk across. Coloured crates only count on goals of their own colour. The gate stays open while a crate sits on its switch. Sliding crates keep going until something stops them, and one-way tiles let you and the crates cross only the way their arrows point.
- The coins lie along a way through the room, and the counter at the top shows how many you have picked up of those laid. The coins you collect are kept even when a try ends. Spend them in the store on shields, upgrades and new looks for the pusher, its trail and the background. Each star you earn on a finished level pays 10% more of that level's coins, or 10% more steps in your next play if you pick that instead.
- A shield takes back the push that got a crate stuck or the step that met a bot, or gives you more steps when they run out.
- Your profile keeps your stats: time played, levels finished, steps taken, crates pushed, coins picked up, earned and spent, and more.
- The game plays in English and in Spanish, in the language you picked on this site. Tap EN or ES at the top of the menu to change it, here and on the site.
Modes #
- Levels: numbered levels that get harder as you go, in worlds of ten, each world with its own colours and music. Every level has three stars: finish it, collect every coin, and finish it on the first try.
- Daily level: one room a day, the same for every player. A new one arrives at midnight UTC.
- Endless: rooms one after another, each a little harder than the last, until one beats you. Your score is how many rooms you cleared.
The leaderboard ranks players with a free account by the furthest level and stars, and by the most rooms cleared in Endless. Its top 10 is in the game and on this page.
